12.1. Discussion Topics. Let’s take a look at some typical high street shops. We are going to practice the passive too. Name the typical shops that you’d find in the High Street. What is a butcher’s, a baker’s, a chemist’s, an ironmonger’s, a convenience store, a greengrocer’s, a post office, a newsagent’s etc? What is sold in each of them? Answer only using the passive. (A limited list only) In a butchers meat and meat products such as lamb, pork, sausages, mince-meat, steak, and chicken are sold. Cakes, doughnuts, rolls, bread, baguettes, croissants, pasties and sandwiches are normally sold. A chemist is a place where medicine, health products, toiletries, cosmetics and baby products are sold. Prescriptions (the official doctor’s medical order for a drug) are picked up and sold there too. Tools, metal work, house fittings and electrical items are bought and sold in the ironmonger’s. ($ Hardware stores.) Almost any type of household products, practical everyday object, and food are sold in a convenience store. Fruit and vegetables are available from a greengrocer’s (sometimes known as ‘grocers.) The things sold in post offices are stamps, envelopes, parcels, packages, as well as stationary, lottery tickets, road tax disks, driving licences and dog licences. In a stationer’s pens, pencils, rulers, paper, cardboard, note pads, staplers, office supplies, and products related to writing, the office and school are sold.
